About Dr. Tanner

Dr. Alexandra Tanner (she/her)

I’m a licensed clinical psychologist (CA PSY34509) based in Los Angeles, California. I am an expert in cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based therapies for the treatment of mental and physical health concerns, including anxiety disorders, OCD, depression, perinatal anxiety and depression, life stress, relationship distress, emotion dysregulation, persistent post-concussion symptoms, recovery from sports injury, and insomnia.

Education

I received my B.A. in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Dartmouth College, where I participated on and captained the women’s NCAA Division I track and field team. After graduating college, I worked as a research coordinator at Massachusetts General Hospital, gaining experience in brain imaging and genetic research. I earned my M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) under the mentorship of Dr. Michelle Craske.

Experience

During my doctoral studies I received extensive training in evidence-based interventions within the UCLA Psychology Clinic, UCLA Anxiety and Depression Research Center (ADRC), VA Long Beach Healthcare System, and the UCLA Screening and Treatment for Anxiety & Depression (STAND) Clinic. I completed my APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship at Weill Cornell Medicine-New York Presbyterian Hospital, where I received specialized training in adult and adolescent OCD, and reproductive mental health, including the treatment of perinatal depression and anxiety. I gained postdoctoral training at the Los Angeles-based CBT practice, Therapy Lab, where I provided CBT services to adults, adolescents and couples for a wide range of mental health concerns.

In addition to my clinical experience, I have co-developed numerous CBT treatment manuals for a variety of presenting concerns, including depression and anxietypersistent post-concussion symptoms, cannabis use disorder, and tinnitus.

Along with seeing clients in my private practice, I am clinical psychologist within the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior in the Steve Tisch BrainSPORT program, providing clinical services and collaborating on research on post-concussion recovery. I am also a member of the Clinical Translational Board for Behaviour Research and Therapy, helping to communicate clinical research findings and evidence-based best practices to providers and the community.
